Quote of the day – Stephen King

From the book, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft…King tells about when the editor at his first paid job gave him some of the best advice he ever got:

“When  you write a story, you’re telling yourself the story,” he said. “When you rewrite, your main job is taking out all the things that are not the story.”

This is one of the few books on writing by an author that I haven’t read. But it will probably be the next should I decide to purchase another one in the future. After reading so many I found that I was completely burned out. I had to take a break and spend some time reading fiction and poetry to recover from the harsh reality of how hard it is to write.

I am really enjoying it…it’s really more memoir than a ‘how to’ book on writing. It’s more of his story and how he became a writer. It’s pretty encouraging, sad in parts…as well as fall off your seat, embarrass yourself because you’re shedding tears while stifling a laugh at the coffeeshop, hilarious.

I got the paperback for $6.99 – if you’re ever up for a good book from a writer, it’s good. And just all of King’s writing, very easy to read.

Such a simply stated instruction, yet invaluable to those of us who aspire to write well.

I read King’s book ON WRITING a few years ago. I figured if anyone should know the secrets of successful writing, it would be Mr. Stephen King.
