Chicago shakes!

Just before 4am CT today, we had a 4.3 magnitude earthquake in the Chicago area that actually caused some light items on tables in my house to shift to the north.

I live about 30 miles north of the epicenter of the quake, which rumbled and woke up many people, including me, thinking it was a snow plow. (We got about a foot of snow yesterday, so we’ve been hearing alot of plows the last twenty-four hours). Thankfully, no one was hurt at all, and it sounds as if there was only minimal damage near the epicenter, cracked walls, pictures falling off the wall, etc.

Incidentally, Lewis – our Great Dane – was found curled in a very strange fetal position this morning when we got up.

I heard about this on the news and thought of you. Does Chicago often experience earthquakes?

Lewis doesn’t look too shook up (pun intended) 😉 to me. He looks rather comfortable.

Actually, the New Madrid fault runs through Illinois, and it provides shocks that are often felt very far away (deep in the earth, I guess). But this one was only about 25 miles from Chicago, so I am not sure why it was so close. I think we experience a small rattle about once every 5 years or so.

This photo was actually during a thunderstorm, but it gets the point across. Do you see his but sitting on the chair? hehehe

I found your blog reading up on the Illinois quake. Sorry your dog was frightened. I went through a large quake with 2 terrified dogs in the Seattle area in 2001. (Nobody hurt, luckily.)

You might be interested in this blog by someone who recently experienced a 6.5 in Eureka, CA, with her dog.

Hope there is no more shaking in Illinois!

Glad you’re okay! Poor Lewis — when we have thunder or fireworks here, Polly hides in the back of my closet. She pulls whatever clothes she can reach off the hangers to make a nest and burrows in it.

Lewis sits his butt on a chair or couch or bed, whatever’s nearby. I don’t know why since he’s never on the furniture otherwise – such a goofball!
